Open Letter of Appreciation to Half-Naked Ultimate Frisbee Boys on The Mall

Dear Half-Naked Ultimate Frisbee Boys on The Mall,

Thank you for wearing very little clothing as you play Ultimate Frisbee.

Thank you for resurrecting a sport that may not have ever gone anywhere since 1995 when hackysacks were all the rage, but has stayed out of my realm of awareness for apparently no good reason.

Thank you for being geeky and adorable and enthusiastically rubbing all over each other in a sweaty homoerotic attempt at blocking said Frisbee from an assumed progression down the field.

Thank you for doing all the above mentioned awesomeness on the National Mall so I can feel like I’m being cultured and worldly while thinking dirty sexy thoughts about you.

Did I mention how grateful I am for the nerdy sexy halfnakedness?

Most kindly,

Jane

P.S. If you ever need a kind of athletically inclined, tall Jew-blogger to join the team… the “contact me” link is above šŸ™‚

Ultimate Frisbee has gone lots of places since 1995. It’s one of the fastest growing sports in America. And a great one at that. šŸ™‚ To see lots of men (and women) playing Ultimate in swimsuits you check out the beaches of Wildwood, NJ the last full weekend of July. It’s crazy.

I’m always lurking. I hadn’t realized it had been so long since I commented. But I do love Ultimate. I agree with Hammer, running is much more necessary in WAFC than actual throwing skills.

http://www.wafc.org will get you many many people who would love to have a kind of athletically inclined, tall Jew-blogger join their teams… women are in short supply in ultimate. Also you could just play rec league and then you get randomly assigned a team. In any case while this letter was not addressed to me, my boyfriend really appreciated it. šŸ˜‰

You should sign up for the Washington Area Frisbee Club’s summer rec league. It’s very beginner-friendly and registration opens either late this week or next. at wafc.org

Hmm…. well that is very tempting. I assume I should know how to throw a Frisbee before I show up? I have a feeling they aren’t so friendly to the whole damsel in distress thing…

If you can throw it backhand in somebody’s back yard, then that’s all the experience you need. There’s a skills self-assessment section in the registration form that the league uses to create balanced teams. Every team has a couple people who are total beginners, and your teammates and captains will work with you to get your skills up over the season. The real challenge isn’t the throwing, but all the running. Makes for a good workout though. It’s coed but men outnumber women 2-point-something to one. Folks are nice – good way to meet people. Admittedly, I’m biased – I started as a total beginner and have been playing for 12 years now.

Yeah, you could actually join without being able to throw, but if you live around here and you want to play in the fall, I’m pretty sure we could find someone to teach you a basic backhand before the next season starts.

I second what Hammer said. I have a bunch of friends who are into Ultimate and they LOVE the frisbee club here. I have considered joining, but I really hate running.

Running sucks. Running after a little plastic disc is fun. I don’t know why, but there you go.

So all you have to do is give them a floppy disk, and they run around half nekkid and stuff?

    It’s too easy…

You are welcome. Your attention is really what we want. Ultimate frisbee is the only available outlet where engineers and physicists can take their shirt off without seeming completely out of place.
